Mr Michael Gifford took up his appointment as Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Kazakhstan in January 2018. He joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1981 and has had a range of diplomatic postings in the Middle East, Asia and Europe. He served as Deputy Head of Mission in Cairo from 2001 - 2004 and British Ambassador to Yemen from 2004 - 2007. In London he has worked on Middle East and counter-terrorism issues as well as acting as Deputy Director for property asset management for the FCO. His most recent overseas position before Nur-Sultan was as British Ambassador to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea), based in Pyongyang, from 2012 - 2015. During his FCO career he studied Arabic at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London in preparation for his first overseas assignment to Abu Dhabi in 1983, and more recently Russian in London and Kiev from 2016 - 17.
